Great Captains Island may be getting a facelift and more visitors within the next few years. The pastoral and less popular island on Long Island Sound is equipped with a bird sanctuary and lighthouse but not with a pier to allow a ferry to dock during low tide.
According to the ferry schedule, there is a service lull two hours before and after low tide. Two options are being looked at," according to Henry Goyette, Greenwich boating coordinator. "We are looking to either extend the pier itself that was built in 1975 or add a floating dock," he said.
Once the island is more accessible, the town is looking to add a three-stop ferry service that would include the Arch Street dock, Island Beach and Great Captain Island. The new route would allow a great flow of visitors and an easier way to get to both islands. "We are not sure of the exact project start date or what structure," said Goyette. "But the floating dock would be a lot cheaper for the town."
