Greenwich answered Gov. M. Jodi Rell's call that towns provide refuges from the heat. But so far, the response from residents has been, well, cool.
Though temperatures swelled to over 100 Tuesday, "no one came because power was still on," said Tim Wall of the American Red Cross' Greenwich Chapter. "The issue really comes if power gets knocked out."
The Western Greenwich Civic Center at 232 Glenville Road has been designated as the town's official cooling center. The second floor meeting room is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and volunteers are handing out free chips, granola bars, bottled water and juice.
None of the three designated cooling centers the Western Greenwich Civic Center, Greenwich Library and the Greenwich Senior Center has generators for dealing with an outage. But the civic center can be hooked up to the generator at the nearby Glenville Volunteer Fire Co. station.
