Water Main Break Shuts West Greenwich Roads

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Glenville Road at Riversville Road in Greenwich was made impassable at 1 p.m. Thursday by a water main break, said police. The busy road was expected to be open by rush hour Friday morning.

“This will have a major impact on all travel in the area,” said Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the Greenwich Police Department.  He said the break would require significant manpower and equipment to repair.

A Greenwich officer on regular patrol saw a geyser erupt out of a crack in the road, according to Gray. “It buckled the pavement and pushed the pavement up. Luckily the water company got in and shut down the water as quickly as possible,” said Gray.

Anthony Franceschni, a supervisor for Aquarion water company, said the Glenville section of town would be without water during the repair. At of 2 p.m. Thursday, Franceschni said the work could be an all-night operation, but should be completed by rush hour Friday morning.

All motorists should avoid the area if possible, and residents were asked to be patient.
