Turf Fields Safe, says Health Dept.

Artificial turf fields like the five currently located at Greenwich High School are safe to use, says the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

The Department spent $245,000 on a study, released July 30, that shows there are no health concerns from inhaling chemicals at the outdoor crumb rubber fields.

However some town officials are still concerned about the artificial turf. According to published reports, Greenwich Conservation Commissioner Denise Savageau says a 14-member “turf task force” committee of health, environmental and education officials will meet in the fall to evaluate the findings of the report.

The report does indicate that these fields are hotter than grass fields and the Health Department recommends users should take precaution in high heat.

The Health Department did not evaluate risks from skin exposure or what would happen if someone accidentally swallowed the crumb rubber.
