Town's 9/11 Memorial Completed

Greenwich new 9/11 memorial at Great Captain's Island has been completed in time for the town's ninth anniversary ceremony Saturday, Sept. 11.

The dedication of the memorial, located next to the renovated Great Captains Island lighthouse, is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 12. Though the memorial was just completed Thursday, the town is also planning a second, more accessible memorial for the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks.

Because ferry service to the island runs only for three month during the summer, the memorial is not accessible most of the year.

"We are going to explore options of putting a secondary memorial here in the town of Greenwich at a park where people can go to 365 days a year," Mary Ann Morrison, president of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, said in a published report.

Veteran Chris Hughes, along with retired businessman Malcolm Pray, planned this year's 9/11 memorial event. Hughes said the event is about letting the victims' families know "we're still here."

The memorial ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the steps of Town Hall. Hughes said the ceremony is held in the evening to allow victims' family members to attend the memorial services at Ground Zero in Manhattan.

At the event, the Greenwich Fire Department, the Greenwich Police Department and GEMS honor guards will pay tribute to fallen first responders. The names of the 12 Greenwich residents and 13 other victims with ties to the town will be read and a wreath will be laid. Most of the victims worked in the World Trade Center. Two were on hijacked planes.
