Town Shares the Ride With Seniors

Share the Fare, a Greenwich senior discount cab, is ready to hit the road again after a two-month hiatus.

The subsidized discount cab ride has had a partnership with the town and Greenwich Taxi for 30 years but hit a wall over an insurance dispute. According to Sam Diebler, director of the Commission on Aging, there were liability issues between the program and the taxi company.

Seniors can purchase $10 worth of coupons for $5 with the town paying $4 and Greenwich Taxi paying $1 or 10% of each purchase. Although there are other transportation programs such as Call-A-Ride and the Transportation Association of Greenwich, seniors rely on the cab company for late afternoon and weekend transportation.

"[Seniors] really need this program. A lot of them visit spouses or loved ones on weekends," said Diebler. "If they have Call-A-Ride drop them off for a 2 p.m. doctor's appointment and don't get finished until 4 p.m., they need a program like Share the Fare."
