Town Girls Join Facebook Cancer Fight

Greenwich High girls like Maria Bermeo and Natalia Kriszan are mystifying teen boys with Facebook status messages lately. They all start with "I like it on ...", but it's a far cry from teen sex. Facebook users everywhere are using this status statement to spread the word about Breast Cancer Awareness month.

"There is a problem [breast cancer] that is present every day," said Bermeo, a GHS senior. "Having the Facebook status allows everyone to participate and promote awareness."

The social media website Mashable explains the idea, "If you’re confused because your Facebook News Feed is filled with women saying that they “like it on” the floor or the kitchen counter, you’re not alone. It’s all part of a new Internet meme that has gone viral on Facebook to raise awareness for breast cancer."Modeled after last October's Facebook status game where women posted the color of the bra they were wearing, the "I like it on ... the chair" status message refers to where girls place their purses when they put them down.

Word of mouth and messages spread like wildfire and, as anyone with Facebook knows, participation is high. The question remains whether it's an effective tool for raising breast cancer awareness.

"Anything to help promote breast cancer awareness is a good thing," said Margaret Sinclair, president of the Breast Cancer Alliance. "Our bra-shaped paddles from our popular 'paddle raise' fundraising event last year are in Richards' windows at the moment. It's out of the ordinary, but thought-provoking."

Its usefulness aside, all the social network buzz seems to have Greenwich High boys confused, if nothing else, giving the girls something to laugh about.

"I don't really know what it is," said Jake Oe, a GHS junior. "I thought it was just a joke."

"The guys are just confused about all of our status," said Bermeo. "It's just a girl thing."
