Tax-Free Shopping Week Begins in Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. — You'll have to fight for parking and weave through crowded Greenwich Avenue sidewalks all week as shoppers take advantage of sales tax-free week in Connecticut, starting Sunday, Aug. 21.

The annual shoppers bonanza is intended to coincide with back-to-school buying needs, but it will also help shoppers who have tightened their purse strings in the fluctuating economy.

The state sales tax was recently raised from 6 to 6.35 percent, and tax exemptions were eliminated on clothes, shoes and accessories less than $50. But during tax-free week, all everyday clothing and footwear priced under $300 will be sales tax-exempt, according to the state Department of Revenue Services.

Connecticut is one of 17 states offering tax-free holidays this year. The state expects the week to cost up to $7.2 million in lost revenue.
