A yearlong investigation into more than $9,000 worth of thefts from car break-ins at the Greenwich YWCA culminated in the arrest of a man from the Bronx, N.Y., police said Thursday.
Since a Nov. 25, 2009, incident in which a car window was smashed and a purse was stolen, eight vehicles at the Greenwich YWCA have been broken into in a similar manner. The last theft occurred Nov. 8. The thefts totaled more than $9,000 in cash and possessions and more than $3,000 in vehicle damages.
Over the past year, the community impact section of the Greenwich Police Department assisted the YWCA to enhance security measures outside and inside the building, including updating its security camera system. Through increased security, police developed a suspected vehicle in 2009 and then another in 2010. The identification of the vehicle led to the identification of Charles Ray Mills, 40, of 1020 Grand Concourse, Apt. 22J, the Bronx, N.Y.
According to Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the department, Mills is a manager at a Costco in Manhattan and has a history of past burglaries in New York state.
Mills turned himself in on request from members of the community impact section Wednesday and was charged with third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief and second-degree larceny, a felony. He was released on $20,000 bond and is due in court Dec. 22.
Gray indicated further arrests in other jurisdictions may be made based on Mills' arrest.
