Suicide Suspected in Middle School Teacher's Death

GREENWICH, Conn. – Steven Allen, the Eastern Middle School Orchestra teacher and conductor, was discovered dead in his Cos Cob home Wednesday morning of what police said appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Co-workers called Greenwich Police and Greenwich Emergency Medical Services when Allen, 57, failed to report for work in the morning. “Failing health conditions may have caused the deceased to become despondent," police said.

Allen was found dead in his apartment at 84 Valley Road in Cos Cob at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday. A weapon recovered at the scene was registered to Allen, police said.

Eastern Middle School’s crisis team convened Wednesday, and Principal Ralph Mayo sent a Parentlink message notifying Eastern parents that night. Students were told of Allen’s death Thursday morning. Guidance and counseling staff at the school are available for students and staff if they need to speak with someone.

Allen was a music educator for 33 years, the last 11 with the Greenwich public schools. During his tenure, the program grew, with over 70 percent of the school’s students participating. Allen was known for teaching students music they often wouldn't learn until high school.

“Mr. Allen will be deeply missed and we send our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and students,” said Kim Eves, director of communication for Greenwich public schools, in a release Thursday.
