Greenwich High School students say a "smut list" of supposedly promiscuous girls is being passed around via text message and creating a lot of tension among students.
"I know a couple of people on it, and there's been a lot of problems at school because of this," said Gary Fraytr, a freshman. "There were four fights in two hours yesterday."
The list of 100 or so names has been posted on Facebook. It mostly names girls from Westchester communities but includes 12 from Greenwich High School. The Facebook page has more than 6,000 "Likes."
GHS student Stephanie Covello said she knows most of the Greenwich girls on the list and at first thought it was funny. "Putting it on Facebook made it more dramatic. Now it's just immature."
GHS Headmaster Chris Winters agreed that the list has caused tension among some of the students, but he denied that it has escalated to violence. Winters characterized the list as derogatory and added that students who send virtual slanders that disrupt the educational process will be subject to school consequences." He did not spell out what the consequences might be.
Johnny Castellani, a GHS freshman, said teachers are talking about the list and asking student not to put names on it.
A Facebook group was recently created advocating for the "smut list" to be deleted. Teens posted concerns on the group's wall mainly asking why someone would create such a list?
