Schools Come First for One Greenwich Voter

GREENWICH, Conn. – For at least one Greenwich parent, the election came down to voting for a stronger Board of Education. Laurie Smith stood outside the District 10 polling location at Glenville Elementary School Tuesday with a sign supporting school board candidates Peter von Braun and Barbara O’Neill.

“The future of our public school system is of the utmost importance to me,” said Smith. "We need to change the board of education, not superintendents." Smith said she is the mother of two children who graduated district school and two currently attending Greenwich High School.

“Barbara I know very well because she was head of the talented and gifted program, now called ALP," she said. "Peter von Braun I’ve just heard really good things about.” Smith added that candidate Anna Saras Povinelli is also a close friend.

Smith, a real estate broker, said she was disappointed that the International Baccalaureate program has been put on a back burner at Greenwich High School. She said she was also disappointed with the resignation of Superintendent Sidney Freund and added, “A lot of bullying has gone on on the board, and I think no one deserves to be bullied.”
