SAT Scores Drop at GHS

Greenwich High School students' scores for the latest SATs declined across the board from last year's figures.

According to figures released by the district Monday, in 2009-2010 students' scores went down on average in all three sections of the SAT, though participation was up.

In the math section, average scores fell from 592 in 2009 to 578. In writing, scores dropped 10 points from 577 last year to 567. In the verbal/reading section, students' scored slipped to 556 from 569 last year. The tests are scored on a scale ranging from 200 to 800 points.

"This is a one-year report, and one year does not necessarily mean it is a trend," district spokeswoman Kim Eves was quoted as saying in a published report. "It is data that we will continue to use as we plan for improvement."

Last year, 71 percent of students took the Scholastic Assessment Test most colleges require for entrance, while this year 79.3 percent of seniors took the exam. The numbers were taken from all five tests administered in 2009-2010.

According to the College Board Web site, the next national SAT dates for 2010-2011 are Oct. 9, Nov. 6, Dec. 4, Jan. 22, March 12, May 7 and June 4.
