Santorum Bows Out of GOP Presidential Race

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum announced he was suspending his campaign Tuesday afternoon, making way for the inevitable nomination of Mitt Romney.

“This has been one of the hardest decisions Karen [Santorum's wife] and I have ever had to face together,” Santorum wrote in a message to voters on his campaign website. Over the weekend, Santorum’s 3-year-old daughter, Bella, who has a rare genetic condition called Trisomy 18, was hospitalized with pneumonia. She was released Tuesday morning before Santorum informed the nation of his decision.

Romney issued this statement on his website after Santorum’s announcement:

“Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity.”
