Rosemary Gilbride, Longtime Greenwich Resident

GREENWICH, Conn. – Rosemary Gilbride, a 40-year Greenwich resident, died Friday at the Edgehill Retirement Community in Stamford. She was 95 years old.

Gilbride was born May 5, 1916, one of eight children, to Alphonse and Anna Shelare in Brooklyn, N.Y. She spent her early years in Brooklyn and in Northport on Long Island, where she attended boarding schools. She graduated from Georgian Court College in 1938, where she won the Georgian Court Art Medal for Painting in Oil. She was an accomplished artist and equestrienne.

She was married to John T. Gilbride, former chairman and CEO of Todd Shipyards Co., until his death in March 2007.

She was a Dame of Malta, a founding parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Greenwich, and was a volunteer and Eucharistic Minister for several years at St. Camillus Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Stamford. Gilbride is survived by son Frank and his wife Carol of Greenwich; son John Jr. and his wife Victoria; and son Gary and his wife Angela of Old Greenwich. She also is survived by seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two sisters.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 29 at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. March 1 at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 469 North St., Greenwich. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greenwich.
