We take them everywhere -- to the store, on family vacations, to the gym and the beach. And as cell phone users, we go through the anguish of dropped calls and no service. But for visitors to Greenwich Point, a new form of communication will be available as of Monday.
It all started when a concerned resident approached Selectman Drew Marzullo about spotty cell coverage around Greenwich Point.
"The motive behind it was simple," said Marzullo. "I was asked what would happen if someone became injured or suffered a medical issue and needed some sort of emergency help. I thought to myself, 'What a great question.' "
Marzullo tested the cell service himself and determined it would not be adequate in emergencies.
So Marzullo, a paramedic for the Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, contacted Police Capt. Mark Kordick, who was able to provide radios that were not being used by the police.
"If someone were to need help, all they would have to do is push a button," said Marzullo. "The radio is programmed to speak directly to emergency personnel and dispatch police, EMS or the fire department."
The radios will be available for beachgoers from March through November at the gatehouse into Greenwich Point. Each user will have to leave a beach pass or license to take a radio.
"Its an extra safety precaution," said Marzullo. "It's to help people feel more comfortable when they walk on a trail."
