Vyacheslav Cherepov, 26, of Danbury Road in Ridgefield, has been arrested, Greenwich police said Monday. Meghan Beebe, 21, was killed in the hit-and-run accident.
Cherepov struck Beebe in the parking lot of a Byram-area restaurant early Saturday, police said. He stopped briefly and then drove away, dragging her under his car, police said. A report in Greenwich Patch said the victim was dragged for four blocks.
Cherepov was arrested Sunday after he returned in his car to the William Street parking lot where the accident occurred, police said. Beebe was apparently struck by a red 2006 Pontiac G6 sedan, police said.
A female companion of Beebe’s tried unsuccessfully to stop Cherepov as he drove with Beebe pinned beneath the car, Greenwich police said. Beebe was found lying on the street by an unidentified resident, police said. She was transported to Stamford Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Cherepov was charged with evading responsibility with serious physical injury, police said. Cherepov pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday in state Superior Court in Stamford.
Cherepov also worked at a restaurant near the accident, according to the Patch report. He is a native of Russia who has lived in Connecticut for 13 years.
Beebe had recently fulfilled her graduation requirements at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
