Residents Push Ed. Board Candidates On Facebook

GREENWICH, Conn. – A new Facebook group has sprouted up in support of four bipartisan Greenwich Board of Education candidates, who say their mission is to “change the Board of Education, instead of changing superintendents.”

One of the group’s first posts reads, “Turmoil on the BOE resulted in the departure of the school’s superintendent in May. Attracting a quality superintendent is difficult in the best of circumstances, but virturally impossible when Board members do not work together. This year’s Board election offers voters the opportunity to change the Board dynamics by electing individuals who can work well with each other.”

Last spring, the district's superintendent, Dr. Sidney Freund resigned, citing difficulties with certain Board of Education members. He was replaced in August by former Greenwich superintendent Dr. Roger Lulow, who will serve as interim head of schools until a replacement is found.

The group, “Greenwich Residents for a Better Board of Education,” has under 100 members so far. It calls itself a Bipartisan Advocacy Group formed Wednesday in support of four board candidates: Barbara O’Neill (R), Peter von Braun (R), Jennifer Dayton (D) and Adriana Ospina (D).

The two Democratic candidates the groups supports - Dayton and Ospina – are running unopposed and will both be elected to fill the two Democratic spots on the board. “No matter what happens on Election Day, both will be elected. We urge our Democratic friends to use two of their four votes to support our endorsed Republican nominees: Peter vonBraun and Barbara O’Neill,” the group’s first post read.

Resident Faith Sommerfield was enthusiastic toward the suggestions and wrote, “Thanks! This is VERY helpful & I will vote for your recommended candidates.”

However, resident Suzanne FitzGerald Aysseh wrote, “In my opinion, for this site to be effective candidates should share more than just their political affiliation.”

Resident Christopher Von Keyserling wrote on the group’s wall, “It is time to end the image shape shifting, ego focus, political arson, and ego polish on the Board of Ed. Let’s get back to the business of educating our children. Vote for von Braun and O’Neil, please.”
