Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced that she has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a 30-day extension so the state can continue collecting information about the tornado damage that struck Fairfield County last month.
"The tornado that ripped through Bridgeport and the extraordinary storms that battered the surrounding area caused major damage, and they struck in a part of our state that is still working to clean up from the twin nor'easters that we saw in March," Rell said in a press release Thursday.
Rell said she was "confident federal officials will understand the unusual circumstances." The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Bridgeport on June 24 and traveled northeast, cutting a path 100 yards wide and two-tenths of a mile long. The intense storms may qualify as a disaster-level event, but Rell said she wanted to be sure the state had all required information before submitting an application to FEMA.
"Joint teams of state and federal officials have been in the field for several days," said Rell. "We have been working with municipal officials and affected homeowners to gather all the information we can about property damage and other effects."
