Registrar Stays Open Late for Voters

After 17 years as the town's Democratic registrar of voters, Sharon Vecchiola has seen many changes. And she wants voters to be aware of some important dates before the Nov. 2 election.

Vecchiola said the registrar's office will be open extra hours until 8 p.m. today for those who want to register in person to vote. If turn 18, move to Greenwich or become a U.S. citizen after today but before Election Day, you may apply in the office during regular business hours until Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon.

"So much has changed," she said. "The voting machines have changed to digital. There has been a new computerized voter registration, although poll workers have stayed the same."

In her years working as Democratic registrar of voters, Vecchiola has seen some memorable mishaps.

"The results came in one night, and we were missing a checker book," she said. "A lot of people had come in, and we couldn't account for the book. But one of the people who happened to come in had a raincoat on and inside his coat was the official checker book. How he got it, I'll never know."
