Rangers Will Return to Island Beach

The park rangers hired at the end of the summer to patrol Island Beach in Greenwich and assist with crowd control will be back next summer. The two retirees hired by the Parks Department in August to patrol the island finished up on Sept. 15, when ferry service ended. The town plans to reinstate the park rangers at Island Beach as well as other possible locations, including Greenwich Point, Great Captains Island, Byram Park and Bruce Park.

"Generally speaking, I think people's response was positive," said First Selectman Peter Tesei in a published report.

Parks director Joseph Siciliano said the town could have as many as eight park rangers next summer, according to published reports.

Adding park rangers was just the latest step this summer in addressing complaints from residents about rowdy behavior at Island Beach. Earlier in the summer, the town reduced the number of people who could visit Island Beach per day to 1,600 from 2,000.
