Green is not just a another color for the children at the North Greenwich Nursery School it's a lifestyle choice. And the school's director and teachers say it's having a ripple effect.
"Parents are impressed that their children are learning how to recycle," says teacher Rochelle Hansen. "The child is almost telling the parents how to do it, which encourages them."
Teachers vary the type of activity they work on each week. School director Mary Hannigan says one taught her class about "litter-less lunches." "She would show the kids what would happen when they throw a plastic baggy away," she says. "Then she showed them how a plastic container is reusable and litter-free."
According to Hannigan and Hansen, the school's green lifestyle sets it apart from a number of other nursery schools. "Kids are extremely aware of what has to be recycled," says Hannigan. "It's all about reduce, reuse, recycle. You'll hear them say, 'I have a litter-less lunch today!' "
The school even brought in a recycling truck to demonstrate what it does for the Earth. It also had a clean-up day outside and picked up litter and debris in the playground.
"On a day-to-day basis we do recycling activities in the classroom with them," says Hannigan. "We do bottle-top recycling, sneaker recycling and a number of others."
So who says it's not easy being green.
