GREENWICH, Conn. Tests of the suspicious white powder found at Greenwich Town Hall late Thursday afternoon show the substance contains no known harmful pathogens, police said Tuesday.
Its going to be an open criminal investigation as to who sent it and why, said Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the Greenwich Police Department. Were taking it very seriously.
At about 4 p.m. Thursday, the Greenwich Public Safety Dispatch received a call regarding a suspicious letter at Town Hall. Officers confirmed the presence of an unknown white powdery substance. The Greenwich Fire Department and Stamford Bomb Squad were contacted, as well as the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the FBI.
Preliminary tests done for hazardous material were negative, but further testing was conducted by the state Department of Public Health. As a precaution, the first responding officer was decontaminated and transported to Greenwich Hospital.
The powder was reportedly sent in an envelope to the Geographic Information Systems section of the town Information Technology Department. The area has now been reopened.
No further information was released at this time.
