After a string of burglaries hit the backcountry area of Greenwich recently, the police department is advising residents of steps to take to avoid becoming a victim.
At a meeting of the Round Hill Association on Wednesday night, Sgt. Mike Reynolds and Capt. Tim Berry discussed the burglaries and provided prevention tips. Berry told residents that police believe the same culprit struck the backcountry residences in January, March and this month. "I'm trying to get the message to you to call us if you see something suspicious, call us," said Berry. "He is looking at unoccupied homes."
In a pamphlet given to residents, police suggested several steps to take to secure homes and to ensure they appear occupied.
Make sure all lamps, radios and TVs on timers are functional and switched on;
Adjust blinds and draperies to make the house appear occupied;
Remove ladders from sight;
Arrange for a friend or neighbor to check your home regularly;
Ask neighbors not to tell strangers or repairmen of your absence;
Cancel newspapers and all other deliveries, or arrange for a neighbor to pick them up;
Have all mail forwarded or held at the post office;
Make arrangements to keep your exterior property maintained; and
Do not leave notes on the doors that indicate you are away.
