Police Ensure Labor Day Weekend Safety

Kids and workers may be looking forward to celebrating the end of summer this Labor Day before getting back to the grind, but the Greenwich Police Department wants to make sure people stay safe during the holiday weekend.

"It's cyclical for the police department, and at this time of year people look at this weekend as one last party of the summer," said Lt. Kraig Gray, department spokesman. "We have increased DWI enforcement and an increased focus on law patrol procedures to do our best to keep the peace."

Gray said DWI arrests and accidents usually increase during Labor Day weekend. Residents should be aware that police will put out extra DWI patrols.

For those planning to host parties and barbecues, the department reminds parents that they have a legal responsibility to not allow anyone under the age of 21 to possess alcohol on their property. Parents should also establish guidelines to keep teens safe at parties at home or elsewhere.

"If nothing else, people should remember that the courts aren't open until Tuesday," said Gray. "When they're arrested, they'll be in a holding cell at the station all weekend long."
