Patriotism Shines at Binney Park

Maybe it was all the people. Or the music wafting over the crowd. But the atmosphere at Binney Park on Saturday evening was totally patriotic as thousands celebrated Independence Day.

"We live in the land of the free," said Darlene Carrotenuto. "This atmosphere helps us remember how important our independence really is."

Families from Greenwich, Stamford and the surrounding areas flocked to the park to enjoy the fireworks and the music of the Sound Beach Community Band. People were spread out all over the park, some picnicking, some sipping a drink, some playing football.

"The Fourth of July is such a fabulous day to spend with loved ones," said Carrotenuto. "We have great music, family and friends."

The band played a variety of classic tunes to energize the crowd for the colorful fireworks later on in the evening. Revelers danced and waved all things red, white and blue.

"We do a variety of concerts in Greenwich," said band member David Pearlman. "We'll play things from the Fourth of July to when Santa Claus comes to Old Greenwich."

The band has been around more than 50 years and had been a volunteer fire department band until 2005.

During an intermission, the band received an award for second best band at the Mamaroneck Firemen's Parade.
