Ultimately the Hibernian association admitted regret in cancelling the annual event prematurely and furthermore insisted that the decision was made by the parade committee and not the police or town as had been rumored.
"The committee’s main concern in cancelling the parade was the safety of marchers and spectators in attending and going home from the parade," said the organizers in a letter. "The committee felt that to give everyone adequate time to plan, a decision was needed by the end of the day on Friday."
At the time of cancellation the forecast called for freezing temperatures and snow starting at 10 a.m. with the snow building with slick conditions as the day wore on.
"Based on this forecast the committee felt it would not be responsible to put any of the marchers or spectators at risk and cancelled the parade," said the organizers.
They have also announced that the term of Grand Marshal Cathy Lavaty’s will be carried over to the 2017 parade which is planned for Sunday, March 19, pending town approval.
