Looking at the Go Greener Greenwich page on the town of Greenwich's Web site, you might think it is stuck in 2009. The date hasn't been updated, but Conservation Commission Director Denise Savageau assures residents that green efforts are still under way, particularly in the schools.
"The 'go greener' effort has rolled into the conservation commission this year," said Savageau. "The idea was the environmental task force started things, but there's a whole lot of work being one on a daily basis. Our emphasis this year is looking at extending environmental literacy by working through the schools and the public as well."
Earlier this year a subcommittee of the Parent-Teacher Advisory Council, the Green School committee, was formed to take on environmentalism in Greenwich schools. "We have representatives from nearly every public and private school in Greenwich. Hopefully we'll pick up more steam in the fall," said Hagregard, who heads the committee alongside Kap Ashworth.
The Go Green committee has three main initiatives. First, is to engage students in environmental activities. "Even things as simple as a book swap," said Hagregard. "It's a good way to show the kids that they can reuse stuff and give back to the community."
The second is continuing to work with the administration in identifying areas to reduce environmental impact. "Last year, some parents had a feeling recycling was spotty in the some of the schools, so we approached administration and asked them to investigate," said Hagregard. "It resulted in them actually writing new recycling policy."
Above all, Hagregard says, the committee wants communication lines between the schools and the community to remain open. "We want to let the community know what the district has done to improve energy efficiency, waste reduction ... the school districts are totally on Green Cleaning products now and we want to get that information out to the parents," said Hagregard.
