Merritt K. Mitchell, Real Estate Broker

Longtime real estate broker and Old Greenwich resident Merritt "Rhett" Kellogg Mitchell died at his home Oct. 16. He was 72.

Mitchell managed the family-owned real estate firm Merritt Associates since 1982. The business began in 1930, when his mother, Mabel, made her mark in the real estate business. The family managed more than 100 brokers and maintained a successful business for more than 75 years.

Mitchell graduated from Avon Old Farms School in Avon and joined the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany. He studied political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated with a bachelor's degree. He enjoyed sailing and immersed himself into history.

He is survived by his brother Morgan and wife Betsy of Riverside; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Rye Presbyterian Church, 882 Boston Post Road, Rye, N.Y.
