Greenwich resident and U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon stopped by the Senior Center on Tuesday to address seniors on her platform and allow them to voice their ideas. "I am far from an expert on the problems facing our seniors today," McMahon said, adding that she uses her mother, Evelyn Carson, as her own personal barometer to gauge the concerns of seniors.
Though Greenwich was the first senior center she's stopped at on her campaign, she also visited Gear Village, an assisted living facility in New Canaan. McMahon said in her travels she's hearing the same issues from senior citizens as she heard on Tuesday. "There are a lot of worries about cost of living adjustments, the high cost of medical care and they're worried for their children and grandchildren in this economy," she said afterwards.
Speaking before a large group of seniors in the cafeteria of the center, McMahon said as a businesswoman who built the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) alongside her husband, Vince, from the ground up, she would bring a fresh perspective to the Senate.
"My husband and I have lived the American dream," she said. "But it's the opportunity in America that I'm afraid is slipping away."
McMahon was asked by one senior how "success in the world of make believe" can translate to economic problem solving in government. She replied that because the WWE is a corporate entity, her experience in management and knowhow for building a business and creating jobs make for unique qualifications other candidates do not have.
McMahon also said as a strong fiscal conservative, her mission would be to strengthen the economy through tax reductions for businesses, reductions in spending and hopefully, she said, "peeling back health care reform" efforts made in the past year.
"I would be in favor of repealing, but it would take a real overturn in November's elections to override a veto, so I think it may be difficult," she said.
