Mary Zalman, Parks and Recreation Secretary

Greenwich resident Mary F. Zalman, who worked as a secretary for the town's Parks and Recreation department and Old Greenwich Civic Center for 35 years, died at Greenwich Hospital on Jan. 23. She was 86.

Zalman was born in Brezno, Czechoslovakia. She immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island with her family at the age of 3. In 1948, Zalman married her husband Walter.

She was a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Byram Veterans Auxiliary and the Sokol Club in Byram. She volunteered with the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary. Zalman was a member of the Mary Martha Guild at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and lately was part of a Tuesday Quilters Group that meets there.

She is survived by her daughters, Andrea Doty and husband Jeff, and Mary-Ann Zalman and husband Gordon Assing; her brother, Sam Fillo and wife Ronnie; and five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Zalman, and her son, Gary Zalman.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Craft Memorial, 40 Leicester St., Port Chester, N.Y. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 286 Delavan Ave., Greenwich. Burial will be at Greenwood Union in Rye, NY. Memorial donations can be made to Outreach for Shut-Ins or the Quilter's Groups at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 286 Delavan Ave., Greenwich, CT.
