Brian Danzi of Greenwich was sentenced to 41 months in prison Monday for his role in smuggling high-grade marijuana from Canada into the U.S. Danzi, who pleaded guilty to the charges in 2009, was also given three years of supervised release by U.S. Judge Mark Kravitz in New Haven.
Danzi, his brother Michael Danzi and others participated in a drug trafficking organization responsible for transporting shipments of high-quality hydroponic marijuana from Canada to southwestern Connecticut for distribution in Fairfield County.
A spokesman for the U.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Connecticut said the traffickers imported hundreds of pounds of marijuana over several years. The Danzis sold 30 pounds of the marijuana per month at a cost of $4,000 per pound, the spokesman said.
During their investigation, federal agents seized nearly $800,000 in cash that was being smuggled to Canada. Michael Danzi previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute marijuana and one count of conspiracy to smuggle bulk cash out of the U.S. He was sentenced in December 2009 to 48 months in prison.
The Greenwich Police Department assisted the Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the police departments of Stratford, Norwalk and Naugatuck in investigating the crimes.
