Man Suffers Critical Injuries in One-Car Crash

The brother of the driver in a serious one-car accident was in critical condition after the car left the roadway and crashed into a large stonewall on Ritch Avenue in Greenwich on Wednesday.

Emergency responders investigated the 4:54 p.m. accident and determined that Manuel Gonzales, 19, of Greenwich, had lost control of his 1997 Honda Odyssey minivan and crashed into the stonewall, hitting it with the vehicle's passenger side. Gonzales' brother, Antonio Hernandez, 21, of Greenwich, had to be extracted from the wreck using the Jaws of Life.

The brothers were taken to Valhalla Medical Center in New York. While en route, Hernandez received advanced life support from ambulance personnel and was admitted to the hospital's trauma intensive care unit. Gonzales was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The police department serious crash investigation team was investigating the accident. Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the department, said high speed was a likely factor. Gonzales had not been charged as of Thursday afternoon.
