Joseph Cortese, Raced Standardbred Horses

Former Greenwich resident Joseph Cortese died Feb. 27. He was 87 years old. He had raised Standardbred horses and worked as an executive in the jewelry industry.

Cortese was born in Manhattan and graduated from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn. He then studied mechanical engineering at the Pratt Institute. Cortese served in World War II and was wounded during an 18-month tour. As a young adult in the 1940s and 1950s, he enjoyed dancing at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. Cortese became CEO of Bursa Associates, a company dealing in jewelry and precious metals. In his spare time, he owned, raised and raced Standardbred horses for over 25 years.

Joe was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Ann Bursa. He is survived by his children, Lena M. Cortese and Charles Cortese; his sisters, Kay DiMalo and Phyllis Arena, and two grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 3 at Princeton Memorial Park in Robbinsville, N.J.
