John Thomas McSharry, Longtime Riverside Resident

GREENWICH, Conn. – John Thomas McSharry, a longtime Riverside resident, died Oct. 31. He was 96 years old.

McSharry was born Oct. 5, 1915, in Braintree, Mass. He graduated from Bentley Businss College in Boston and began his professional career at Atlas Powder Company in Stamford.

During World War II, McSharry served with the Coast Guard in the North Atlantic. He later pursued a career in business finance, working for the Bridgeport Brass Company and National Distillers and Chemical Corporation. After his retirement, he worked at Torqmaster in Stamford, retiring again, in earnest, in 2008 at age 93.

He married Jean Kilcoyne of Stamford in 1950, and they soon moved from Bronxville, N.Y., to Riverside, where they raised their growing family and resided for over 50 years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 61 years, are three sons, Timothy, Matthew and Hugh; four daughters, Jean-Ellen, Margaret, Maureen and Aileen Marsh, and 13 grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated in the chapel at Saint Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Catherine of Siena Church or to Kids in Crisis of Greenwich.
