Former Greenwich resident John T. Flannery died of cancer at his Cheshire home Feb. 1. He was 87.
Flannery graduated from Greenwich High School in 1941 and served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After returning home, he began his career with the Greenwich Police Department as a patrol officer and worked there until retiring in 1975 as captain of the traffic division. After completing his associate's degree at Norwalk Community College, he did private security work for the State University of New York, Gleason Plant and Pitney Bowes in Stamford, where he worked for 10 years.
In his retirement, Flannery wintered in Florida, where he enjoyed a good game of horseshoes and traveling.
Flannery was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Mary Mohyde Flannery.
He is survived by son John Flannery and wife Virginia; daughter Ann Murphy; sisters May McAndrews and Eileen Gove; and brother William Flannery.
Calling hours will be 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Leo Gallagher Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church, 178 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich.
For years Flannery took part in the Farmington Relay for Life. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society event online or to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, 1579 Straits Turnpike, Unit C, Middlebury, CT 06762.
