James Lunney Jr., Retired Greenwich Detective

GREENWICH, Conn. – Retired Greenwich Police Detective James J. Lunney Jr. died this week, Police Chief James Heavey announced. Lunney was 69 years old.

The long-time Stamford resident served in both the patrol and traffic divisions. He started with the Greenwich Police Department on Oct. 21, 1963, and retired on May 1, 1987.  

He was promoted to detective in 1973 and worked as an undercover narcotics officer alongside Frank Garr. Together, the two were given the John A. Clarke award in 1982 for “opening 58 drug cases in the previous year and making 54 arrests as a result of their investigations.”

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church on Greenwich Avenue. There will be no calling hours.
