GREENWICH, Conn. Dr. James W. Innes, a former Greenwich doctor, died Aug. 29 surrounded by his family. He was 79.
Innes was born on Oct. 14, 1931, in Indianapolis. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with highest honors from Williams College in 1956. He earned his doctor of medicine in 1960 at Cornell University Medical College, where he became a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He trained at New York Hospital and Yale University Medical Center. He practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology in Greenwich from 1964 to 1997, when he retired from private practice.
Innes was a Greenwich resident for 47 years and was active in many activities. He served on the Board of Education, was long-term member of the Representative Town Meeting and chaired several committees, and led the Riverside Community Association and Friends of Greenwich Point. Innes also served on the vestry of St. Pauls Episcopal Church. Since retirement, he volunteered in Riverside Elementary School reading with first-graders. He was passionate about travel, sailing, skiing and golf and was a member of Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich for more than 40 years.
Innes is survived by his wife Eleanor Eggers Innis; daughters, Deborah Innes and Pamela Strasburg, along with husband Mark; brother John Innes and wife Marianne; brother-in-law Richard Eggers and wife Lynda; grandchildren, Emily and Christopher Strasburg; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Riverside. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 200 Riverside Ave., Riverside, CT 06878.
