Howard Mourns Death of TV Dad

Greenwich resident and "Happy Days" star Ron Howard praised Tom Bosley as a "great father" and "wonderful artist" Tuesday on learning of the death of the actor who played his onscreen dad in the hit 1970s comedy sitcom.

"I'm so saddened by the loss of our wonderful Tom Bosley," said Howard in statement. "Remarkable on so many levels, Tom's insight, talent, strength of character and comic timing made him a vital central figure in the 'Happy Days' experience."

The stage and screen actor died of heart failure Tuesday at a hospital near his Palm Springs home, according to published reports. He was 83. In his statement, Howard said he already missed the man who played Howard Cunningham, father to Howard's Richie Cunningham on "Happy Days" for the show's 11-year run.

"A great father and husband, and a wonderful artist, Tom led by example, and made us all laugh while he was doing it," said Howard. "My last conversations with Tom reflected the love of life and peace of mind that he always maintained throughout his full and rewarding life."
