Herbert Vreeland von Gal, Radiologist

Greenwich resident Dr. Herbert Vreeland von Gal died Dec. 28. He would have turned 92 on Jan. 23.

Vreeland von Gal graduated from Duke University in 1941 and earned his medical degree from Long Island College of Medicine in 1944. After graduation, he served in the  Army Medical Corps as captain of general surgery.

He was a senior attending radiologist at Greenwich Hospital and founding member of the Greenwich Radiological Group. Vreeland von Gal was known to leave work to have dinner with his family and tuck his children into bed and then return to the hospital. He was also an avid storyteller.

He is survived by his nine children, Ann von Gal, Mia Rossi, Bar von Gal, Peter von Gal, Tom von Gal, Diane Tobin, Tara Schwartz, Martha Reed Donahue and Dirk von Gal and 23 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church on Dec. 31 at 11 a.m.
