Henry A. Hubschman, a Greenwich resident, businessman, lawyer and public servant, died of cancer at his home Feb. 9. He was 63.
Hubschman was born in Newark, N.J., and graduated summa cum laude from Rutgers University in 1969 and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1973, the same year in which he received a master's degree in public policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. From 1973 to 1974, Hubschman was a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Frank Murray in Massachusetts. He became executive assistant and adviser to Patricia Roberts Harris, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, from 1977 to 1979. He was an associate (1974-77 and 1979-80) and then a nationally recognized litigation partner (1980-92) at the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson in Washington, D.C.
In 1992, he became general counsel of General Electric Aircraft Engines. In 1997, he was appointed president and CEO of GE Capital Aviation Services, the commercial aircraft financing and leasing business of GE and a unit of GE Capital. He served as chairman from 2009 until retiring earlier this year.
In his free time, Hubschman enjoyed reading and playing a good match of tennis. He also enjoyed discussing politics, books and movies with friends and family. He has served as a director of the GE Fund and the Jewish Federation of Greenwich.
Hubschman is survived by his wife, Joanne; children, Lilly, Josie, Ellis and Nathan Hirschman; sister Susan Wainberg; and two nephews. A funeral service was held Feb. 10 at Temple Sholom in Greenwich.
