Helen Cabrera, 75, of Old Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. – Helen Cabrera of Old Greenwich, died on Nov. 12 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 75 years old.

Cabrera was born on March 10, 1936, in Easton, Pa. She graduated from Easton High School and received her degree from Rider University, where she met her husband, Jim.

Cabrera authored four books creatively depicting her journey through life, loss and love. She was completing her fifth book when she died. She served as secretary of the board of the National League of American Pen Women.

Cabrera lived in Old Greenwich 38 years, and spent winters at Mariner Sands in Stuart, Fla. She collaborated with Rider College and endowed a scholarship in her parent’s name. She also chaired the James C. Cabrera Memorial scholarship fund, which gives an annual scholarship to a member of the Greenwich High School football team. She was an active member of the Greenwich Point Conservancy, the Innis Arden Golf Club, Greenwich Country Club and Mariner Sands.

Helen and her late husband were married 41 years. She is survived by her sons, Joseph and James, along with Mary Pat Greeff and Ginge Cabrera; seven grandchildren, Jimmy, Tyler, Brooke, Peter, Katie, Jake and Caroline, all of Greenwich, and her sister, Virginia Bartolet, and her husband, Terry.

A Mass was held Tuesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the James C. Cabrera Memorial Scholarship Fund at 4 Shoreham Club Road, Old Greenwich, CT 06870.
