GREENWICH, Conn. If you live near the Long Island Sound in Greenwich town officials advise you to evacuate by 7 p.m. Saturday.
Waiting longer than that to make the decision to evacuate will place you in progressively greater danger, First Selectman Peter Tesei said in a release Saturday.
Police have notified residents of neighborhoods that are prone to flooding that they should leave.
Hurricane Irene is expected to bring tropical force winds to the area beginning Saturday night around 11 p.m. It is expected to make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane by 7 a.m. Sunday with sustained winds of 75 mph and wind gusts into the 90s. The storm may also bring 8 to 10 inches of rain and a storm surge of over 6 feet.
Two emergency shelters opened Saturday: the Western Greenwich Civic Center, located at 449 Pemberwick Road, and Eastern Middle School, 51 Hendrie Ave.
