Kim Eves said one of two buses carrying fourth grade students from North Mianus School was involved in an accident north of New Haven on Interstate 91.
Although the injuries were only bumps and bruises, the students, teachers and chaperones on the bus were transported to Middlesex Hospital in Middletown for examination, Eves said.
A new bus and driver were dispatched and the students, staff and chaperones are on their way back to Greenwich, Eves wrote in an email sent out shortly after 7 p.m.
Parents of the students involved were notified quickly, she said. School Principal Angela Schmidt and Deputy Superintendent Ellen Flanagan were on route to the hospital.
All of the students will be transported back to Greenwich after they have been released from the hospital, Eves said. Any parent who chooses to drive to the hospital will be allowed to bring their child home, she said.
A second bus carrying North Mianus students on the field trip was not involved in the accident but was delayed in returning to Greenwich. It arrived back at the school at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday.
There was no further information available, including how many students, teachers and chaperones were on the school bus or the extent of the damage to the school bus.
