A 2 ½-hour stand-off between Greenwich police and a Quarry Knoll resident described as a really good guy whos down on his luck end peacefully Monday. The 48-year-old man surrendered when police sent a robot into the home and it opened the door to a bedroom where the man had locked himself in.
The Police Department received a phone call Monday morning from family members saying the man was acting erratically and delusional. They told police they believed he may have overmedicated himself on prescription drugs. Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the department, said the drugs were for a pain stemming from a back injury.
When officers arrived, family members told them the man had been depressed, had been acting aggressively toward family members, had weapons in the house and may be angry that the police had been called.
Rather than confront the man, Gray said, the officers and family members remained outside and tried for 2 ½ hours to communicate with him. When that failed, the Stamford Bomb Squad was called in to assist with a remote control robot with a video camera.
Police said the man appeared disheveled and confused and wasnt sure what happened. Medical personnel attended to him and transported him to Greenwich Hospital. Police are calling the incident a casualty call and no charges were made.
First Selectman Peter Tesei went to the scene once the standoff had ended, The Greenwich Time said, because he knew the man. "I am relieved to know it ended with no loss of life or harm to any individual," Tesei said. "This centered around an individual who was agitated due to a medical condition and his mother expressed concern that he might harm himself or someone else. I think that is why the response was what it was."
