State law provides the program for renters who are elderly or disabled, and whose annual incomes do not exceed certain limits.
Under the program, a check is directly remitted to an approved applicant by the state.
The checks represent partial refunds of rental and utility payments.
Persons renting an apartment, cooperative housing or leasing a mobile home space may be eligible.
The maximum allowable annual income, based on numbers from 2015, is $35,200 for a single person and $42,900 for a married couple.
Rent rebates can be up to $900 for married couples, and $700 for single applicants.
