Greenwich Selectman David Theis, 65, Dies Unexpectedly

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich Selectman David Theis, 65, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, according to a joint statement from his colleagues, First Selectman Peter Tesei and Selectman Drew Marzullo.

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved selectman, friend and colleague David N. Theis," the statement said. "Dave passed away on late Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 23.

"As a Greenwich native, Dave was involved in many facets of the community. His contributions touched the lives of so many of our fellow residents each and every day," the statement said.

"Over the past five years, we have been honored to serve on the Board of Selectman with Dave, who brought integrity, wisdom, leadership, and humor to every aspect of town government," Tesei and Marzullo said. "There was no better partner to serve with and to call your friend.

"Our prayers are with Dave's family, especially his partner of many years Kerrin Coyle, and his sisters Ginny and Nancy. We ask that our fellow residents continue to send their prayers to Dave's friends and family," the statement said.

"The flags at all town buildings are ordered to be flown at half-staff until such time as Selectman Theis is laid to rest."

Theis, who lived in the Cost Cob with Coyle, worked at Wells Fargo as first vice president in the private client group in the Old Greenwich office.

Theis suffered an apparent heart attack while working out a Greenwich gym, according to Greenwich Time . No details on his death were released by his colleagues.

A Republican, Theis was a third generation Greenwich resident and attended Greenwich Public Schools. After graduating from Greenwich High School he went on to receive a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of New Haven.

He was a former faculty member at Greenwich Country Day School. Over the years, he devoted much of his spare time to serving the community in many nonprofit organizations, including the Greenwich YMCA ,United Way, Masonic Lodge of Greenwich, Connecticut chapter of NFL Alumni and the Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Association.
