GREENWICH, Conn. The Greenwich Police Department has sworn in a new officer, putting it one step closer to filling vacancies left by retirements.
The new recruit is John M. Tar, whose daughter, Anni, 10, was visiting from Indiana for the occasion and handed her father his badge at the ceremony Monday at Town Hall.
Tar, a resident of Seymour, is a graduate of St. Josephs High School in Trumbull and attended the University of Maryland at College Park, where he majored in engineering. He previously worked as a wrecker operator and also performed fleet maintenance, accident clearance and office supervision. Prior to this job, he did car maintenance and repair.
Tar will be required to complete an 18-month probationary period, during which he will continue his education at a 26-week program at the State Training Police Academy, followed by a 12-week field training program in Greenwich after the new year.
