When the CVS on Greenwich Avenue was robbed at gunpoint in February, Sgt. John Thorme of the Greenwich Police Department confronted the armed suspect and arrested him without injury to anyone involved. For his actions, he is being honored as officer of the month for March.
To some, the police confronting a drug-fueled suspect believed to be armed with a handgun may seem like its all part of the job. However, the potential negative consequences of an armed confrontation cannot be overstated, said Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the department. When an officer approaches what is potentially the most dangerous of calls, the officer must consciously consider a host of factors that must be weighed, evaluated and acted upon in a split-second.
The suspect, Dominick F. Glowacki, 27, of 363 Willet Avenue in Port Chester, had fled the CVS with 924 Oxycontin pills. He was armed with a pellet gun. When Thorme found Glowacki on East Putnam Avenue, the suspect initially was not prepared to comply. But thanks to Thorme, the suspect quickly tossed the weapon aside and was taken into custody. Glowackis arrest led to charges being brought against a suspect in the armed robbery of the Subway on Greenwich Avenue two days earlier.
Sgt. John Thorme, who is a highly seasoned officer with years of tactical training and a former K-9 handler, acted in a highly disciplined, trained and composed manner and came up with the best possible outcome: apprehension [and] no one was hurt, said Gray.
