GREENWICH, Conn. Greenwichs nursing home, which is slated for renovations beginning this year, was named one of the Best Nursing Homes in Connecticut in a recent report released by U.S. News and World Report.
Nathaniel Witherell was cited for its five-star Medicare rating from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, an honor only 12 percent of nursing homes have attained. The system measures recent health inspections, staff levels and clinical quality outcomes. The rating system evaluates every nursing home participating in the Medicare system, with five stars being the highest.
"Our commitment to person-centered care, in combination with extremely low turnover, has made it possible for Witherell to foster consistent assignments of nurses and certified nursing assistants to residents," said Allen Brown, executive director of Witherell.
Witherell was the only town-owned facility in Connecticut on the list published by the magazine. It is owned and operated by the town of Greenwich and has been serving the community for more than 50 years. The facility is slated to receive money from the town toward a $22.5 million renovation project.
"Town ownership is also the primary reason for Witherells unique volunteer program, Brown said. Hundreds of town residents volunteer their time to enrich the lives of our residents, bringing energy and providing a connection to the community."
Witherell was one of the first nursing homes to promote person-centered care, in which residents determine their own daily routine, including timing of services, menu choices, fine-dining services and a calendar of events from which to choose.
